In 1969, a hundred of the world's best
scientists met in Rome to discuss the
predicament of mankind. They were called
'The Club of Rome' and they agreed on
3 points:
i) If mankind continues down the present
path of resource depletion, environmental
degradation and population growth, life
on Earth would become intolerable within
100 years.
ii) It is possible to prevent the destruction
of our habitats if a global effort is
made to find ways of living in a more
environmental and sustainable way.
iii) The sooner we begin this process
of change, the more chance there is of
succeeding.
From this and subsequent meetings came
the Earth Summit of Rio de Janeiro where
178 countries, including Great Britain,
signed up to 27 principles of change making
a new environmental and social agenda
for the 21st Century - Agenda 21.
